Naples – Sorrento, Amalfi Coast
From Naples, we could have cultivated our minds by learning about volcanos or the archaeology and history of Pompeii and the Herculaneum, but we went for scenery with a bus ride south to Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast. In the charming Mediterranean tourist town of Sorrento we roamed around for a while, had lunch at an outdoor park restaurant, and then headed down what has been described as one of the most beautiful drives in the world – I believe it. Vertical mountains rising from the sea with an impossible road winding along the mountain hundred (thousands?) of feet above the water. Stunning views at every turn – even mostly through window of the bus, which was sharing this narrow road with almost bumper to bumper traffic, with scooters passing on the center line and even a few bicyclists on what would have to be a thrilling and a bit dangerous ride.
